Great bookshop moments in film

In honour of National Bookshop Day this Saturday 20 August, we’ve put together a collection of some of our favourite bookshop moments from the movies.

The Never Ending Story

Notting Hill

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Beauty and the Beast

You’ve Got Mail

The Big Sleep

The clip can't be embedded, but here's a link.

Funny Face

Again, the clip can't be embedded, but here's the link.

There are lots more we’re sure we missed (and some others we couldn’t find any clips for) but we hope this snapshot of great bookshop moments inspires you to get out there and visit your local bookshop this Saturday.

Buy a book! (Or two, or three…)

  1. I like the scene at the beginning of 'Before Sunset' where Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke meet each other again after 10 years in Shakespeare & Co. in Paris.

  2. How could they forget 84 Charing Cross Road. I can still smell the books!

  3. Oh yes, 84 Charing Cross - that's a must too.

Beauty and the Beast was my daughter's favourite film for a long time - and the main reason was because Belle is a reader. What a heroine!

  4. Hannah and Her Sisters has a fabulous bookshop scene.
Eric Rohmer's characters are always wandering in and out of bookshops.
Maybe the best bookshop is in the Danish film set in Scotland, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself.
The Lives of Others ends in a bookshop, but The Big Sleep would be my winner.
